How Much to Tip Taxi and Uber in Mexico
Written by Becky Schmidt
Taxi and Uber tipping in Mexico is lighter than restaurant tipping. In a lot of everyday rides, people simply round up or leave a small extra amount for convenience. That is why this category feels less rigid than dining.
If you need a quick percentage for a larger fare, use the taxi tip calculator or the broader Mexico tip calculator. For most rides, though, a simple rounding-up approach works well.
Taxi Tipping in Mexico
For a normal taxi ride:
- Rounding up the fare is often enough
- A small extra tip is appreciated if the driver helps with bags
- Around 10% is a reasonable upper-end guideline for especially helpful service
This is different from restaurants, where 10% to 15% is more established.
Uber Tipping in Mexico
For Uber and other rideshare trips, tipping is appreciated but usually not heavy.
Good rules of thumb:
- Short everyday ride: round up or add a small amount
- Airport ride with luggage: add more if the driver helps
- Longer ride or difficult traffic: a modest tip is appreciated
- Excellent service: around 10% is reasonable
Airport Transfers and Private Drivers
Airport transfers sit a little closer to tour or hotel service than to a quick city taxi.
Consider tipping more when:
- The driver handles several bags
- They help you find your hotel or check-in area
- The trip is long or logistically annoying
- Service feels especially smooth and professional
In those cases, 10% to 15% can make sense, especially for a private driver.
When Not to Overdo It
One reason visitors overtip rides in Mexico is that they carry their restaurant habits into every service category. That usually is not necessary.
For many ordinary taxi and Uber rides, these are enough:
- Rounding up to the next convenient amount
- Leaving a small extra cash tip
- Saving bigger tips for luggage help, airport runs, or standout service
Pesos or Dollars for Drivers?
Pesos are still better for most rides, especially local taxis and app-based trips. The amounts are easier to size correctly, and the driver can use them immediately.
If you are only carrying dollars in a resort area, they may still be accepted, but pesos are cleaner and more practical.
Bottom Line
For taxis and Uber in Mexico, rounding up is often enough. If the driver helps with luggage, handles an airport transfer, or provides especially good service, adding around 10% is a solid move.
